You've created a new website for your church now how do I make sure people can find it. In the IT industry this is referred to as "search engine optimization" or SEO. Chances are unless someone recommended this site to you at your Church you found this site via a Search engine. So how does this all work. First you have to understand that SEO is an area professionals specialize in. Trying to come up with a list of ways guarenteed to help your Church rank the highest has a lot of factors that play on it these factors are our focus today and the top 3 are.
- Your audiance- When you preach you always have to consider the audiance. A website is no different. What group of people do you expect to use your website and what group of people do you want to use your website. What terminology does this group use. How do they think about church.
- Your competition - Every "Church" is "Christian" so maybe competition isn't a word that sits well with some but in the end only one church can rank the highest in search engines. If you have a multi-million dollar mega church next door with a team of developers working SEO 24x7 your probably not going to beat them out of thier spot so you might want to try to find areas they aren't trying to cover.
- Search Habits - The techniques of making your church visible in 2010 are not the techniques you'll need next year. Next year it could all change. To run a successful ministry you have to be able to work a roladex, write letters and make phone calls. In short you have to communicate. The methods people are using to communicate are changing we have to keep up if we want to continue to communicate God's good news.
The techniques we will look at over the next couple days are designed for small churches that just want to get found. When you really start trying to get to #1 on the list and start fighting with your competition for the coveted spot these techniques are no longer relavent you'll likely need a professional Search Engine optimizer.
